As many prepare for the Christmas holiday, residents of Iroquois Falls are preparing to close the paper mill. Resolute Forest Products announced that the mill will be closing as of today putting the remaining 180 employees permanently out of work. Resolute made the announcement shortly after the municipal elections. Iroquois Falls new mayor, Michael Shea, is trying to work with Resolute, the government and others to see what can be done to reopen the mill. FONOM and She have already made a pitch to the province and are looking for further meetings early in the New Year.
