Family Celebrates 60 Years of Farming

A Timmins family is celebrating 60 years of farming in the city.

Haasen Farms is celebrating it’s diamond anniversary of family dairy farming in Timmins. Over the past 60 years the farm has been through a lot. The Haasen family says about five years ago the barn caught fire and the family almost lost the business. A re-build plan was out in place and the family says the business came back stronger.

Frank Haasen says the dairy business has been passed down over the years and has changed since he started farming with his dad.

The farm currently milks 110 of its 230 cows with an automated machine that senses each cows collar. The machine will read the chip on the collar and it knows exactly when the cow last gave milk, how much it gave and if it’s ready to be milked again.

Haasen says its exciting to see how far the family farm has come and continues to grow. He is currently working with his youngest son Eddy, who he says is ready to fully take over the business in a few years. When asked about the future of the business, he says to ask his son.
