Timmins Raises Indigenous Flags

Three new flags are now permanently flying at Timmins City Hall.

As part of National Indigenous People’s Day, the city raised the flags of the Mattagami First Nation, Nishnawbe Aski Nation and Metis Nation of Ontario. Mayor Steve Black says this has been in the works for a year and he is excited to see history being made. Black says this flag raising is about recognizing the rich Indigenous culture and history in Timmins and all the rights that go with it.

The leaders of the three Indigenous groups pulled the cords to raise their own flags. NAN Deputy Grand Chief Jason Smallboy says he is proud to be apart of this historic event. This is the first time all three flags are flying at City Hall. Smallboy says this is a very important step forward for the community and surrounding territories.

The flags will now say up in front of City Hall beside the Timmins, Francophone and Ontario flags.
