Detour Gold Fined $62,500 for Harvesting Timber Without a Licence

A Cochrane mining company is facing a $62,500 fine for harvesting Crown timber without a licence.

Detour Gold Corporation pleaded guilty to the offence on October 12th.

Back in December 2014, Detour Gold applied for a Forest Resource Licence to harvest 159 hectares of Crown forest within the mine property. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry says part of the proposed forested area fell outside of the boundary approved by an environmental assessment and the company would have to do another assessment before harvesting activities could be approved.

The MNRF says between March and September of 2015, a local forestry company working under Detour Gold harvested over 61 hectares without a Forest Resource Licence.

The ministry says if you see any natural resource violations, report it to the MNRF Tip Line.
