Organizers believe this weekend’s Gold Cup Classic high school basketball tournament in Timmins will be the most competitive ever. A total of 28 teams from Ontario and Quebec are in the city this Friday and Saturday for the annual junior and seniors’ basketball event. The city’s four high schools, Roland Michener, Theriault, O’Gorman and Timmins High will each feature Friday’s round-robin games. Then all the action stays at Timmins High for Championship Saturday. First up Saturday afternoon is the seniors’ consolation game for third place at 1:30pm. At 4:30pm the juniors play for gold and silver and then at 6:oopm the seniors take to the court for high school basketball supremacy. This is the 42nd year for the Gold Cup Classic.
