Collision involving e-bike prompts police reminder of regulations

A collision between a motor vehicle and an e-bike last Wednesday night has Timmins Police outlining rules and safety tips for e-bikes and e-scooter.

The collision was at the intersection of Preston St. and Algonquin Blvd.

The investigation confirms that two young women were on the e-bike, and it didn’t stop at a red light. They were both taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Under Ontario regulations:

  • Minimum operator age: Riders must be at least 16 years old to operate an e-bike or e scooter.
  • Helmets: Riders must wear an approved bicycle or motorcycle helmet, as applicable.
  • Rules of the road: E-bike riders must obey applicable traffic laws, including stopping at stop signs and obeying traffic signals.
  • Safe operation: Riders must operate their devices responsibly, remain aware of their surroundings and exercise caution around motor vehicles, pedestrians and other road users.
