The best Little League baseball players between Thunder Bay and Ottawa and stretching over to Windsor will be in Timmins over the weekend for the provincial championships.
The Timmins Montanas Lynx will host the competition for a chance to go to the nationals in Glace Bay, N.S. the following weekend.
Tournament director Dan Ouellet says these players are all eleven and 12 years old.
“The way Little League operates is all the players must play house league,” he explains. “and then on top of that, there’s the all-star program which these teams are all representing.”
There are four games every day from Friday until Sunday and then semi-finals on Monday and the final on Tuesday. They’re played at the Mountjoy Historical Conservation Park beside the Mattagami River. There’s no fee to watch them.
Ouellet says Little League is enjoying its biggest summer ever in Timmins.
“This year we had five teams in our house league, approximately 65 players. So they chose eleven of the best players out of those 65 to represent Timmins Little League in the provincial championship.”
