Author with northern hockey roots writes about what kids should get from sports

A longtime minor hockey coach in Kingston who played hockey as a kid in Timmins has written a book called “The Right Way to Win: Building Humans Before Athletes”.

Nick Bohdanec says the scoreboard in any sport is the benchmark, but is a misconception of what winning really is. He says parents and coaches should reflect on what they and their kids are taking from the game.

“Are we building good humans? — because those good humans naturally with the ability to become resilient prove effort, being in a social space with their peers,” he states. “The winning comes or the scoreboard comes naturally after that.”

He says kids should enjoy whatever sport they’re in. They shouldn’t play hockey because we’re Canadian and it’s our sport.

“In the summertime, my buddies are playing soccer or baseball so I have to play soccer or baseball. If I’m not in, I’m out. That’s the problem with youth sports now. It’s become a business.”

Bohdanec adds that calling something “elite” drives business.  But a kid needs to feel the want or need to play.

The book is available from Amazon.
