Too early to predict flooding this spring

It’s no surprise that the snow depth in the Timmins area this spring is above normal.  However, Mattagami Region Conservation Authority general manager David Vallier says it’s too early to say whether there will be flooding. The primary factor is weather.

“At this point, it would be impossible to predict any type of flooding based on the amount of snow on the ground,” he says, “without knowing how much rain we’re going to get in the weeks to come.”

Vallier adds that the below-freezing nights we’ve been experiencing are helpful in keeping the snow from melting too quickly.

Meanwhile, rivers and streams are starting to open up, and banks are getting slippery.

“We just want to remind people, especially parents to let their kids now, because it at times becomes a fascination with kids and younger ones, Vallier warns.  “There is a potential danger with some that faster moving water that is definitely cold than it is later in the spring and summertime.”
