‘Marked decrease’ in impaired driving charges in 2019

Don’t expect Timmins Police officers to put away their roadside breathalyzers and stop conducting random RIDE checks, yet they are cautiously optimistic about the latest impaired driving stats.

As communications coordinator Marc Depatie tells us, there is a significant reduction in the first three months of 2019.

“We’ve charged a total of four persons with impaired operation or related charges under the Criminal Code since the beginning of the year.  Eight persons were charged for the same time frame in 2017 and ten people were charged between January 1st and March 27th in 2018.

“This marked decrease for the beginning of 2019 of course is a cause for guarded optimism.  We’re a long way from home and there is still a persistent segment of the driving population who insists on drinking and driving.”
