The crack of the bat will no longer be heard at Fred Salvador Athletic Field at the Hollinger Park… but the roar of the crowd will still be there – louder in a lot of cases.

One item in the City of Timmins municipal budget this year approves the conversion of the park to an event location.  The stands and dugouts will remain, but everything associated with baseball will disappear.

City Hall says it’s in negotiations with the French Catholic school board and the local baseball leagues, to use the field at Ecole Catholique Secondaire Thériault.

Sunday collision proves the season of moose being on our highways is here https://www.mytimminsnow.com/72594/news/sunday-collision-proves-the-season-of-moose-being-on-our-highways-is-here/ Tue, 07 May 2024 16:16:45 +0000 https://www.mytimminsnow.com/?p=72594

(Moose on the loose 07 05 24 BM) web

Here’s proof that moose season has arrived on highways in the region.

At about 10:30pm Sunday, a moose was killed when it was hit by a car on Hwy. 11, west of  Cochrane. OPP say a hoof came through the driver’s side window.  The driver and passenger suffered only minor injuries.

HOW TO REDUCE YOUR RISK OF A MOOSE COLLISION

  • Obey the speed limit, risk of injury is greater at higher speeds.
  • Be cautious in areas of reduced visibility, hills, curves, and dense vegetation.
  • Use your high beams when possible (low beams for oncoming traffic)
  • Keep your eyes on the road, scanning for wildlife. A passenger can do this too.
  • Stay alert and avoid distractions such as cell phones.
  • If you have the choice - avoid driving the highway higher risk times - dusk and dawn.
  • Seatbelts are a must; risk of serious injury is greatly increased in unbelted persons involved in a moose collision.
  • Be cautious not to veer into oncoming traffic and be aware of vehicles around you when braking.

Stuff that doesn’t belong being found as curbside bulk waste collection begins https://www.mytimminsnow.com/72588/news/stuff-that-doesnt-belong-being-found-as-curbside-bulk-waste-collection-begins/ Tue, 07 May 2024 15:11:14 +0000 https://www.mytimminsnow.com/?p=72588

Bulk waste collection as part of spring clean-up only started Monday and already, city workers are encountering a lot of things that don’t belong at the curb.

“We’re not going to be collecting recyclable materials at the curb,” says waste management supervisor Patrick Bélanger noting that the full list of what’s accepted and what’s not is on timmins.ca.

“It’s actually pretty detailed, and we’re still finding that people are putting stuff (they shouldn’t) at the curb.”

He points to a couple items frequently found, like barbecues.

“We will not pick it up as part of bulk item collection, because it’s mostly made out of recyclable steel. Some hazardous waste, like old paint cans and all that, that’ll be at another event that we’re going to be hosting in June.”

If you’re using bags, Bélanger asks that they be clear ones, not the black garbage bags.

Celebration of the life of Vic Power set for Wednesday evening at Timmins Museum https://www.mytimminsnow.com/72559/news/celebration-of-the-life-of-vic-power-set-for-wednesday-evening-at-timmins-museum/ Tue, 07 May 2024 10:00:14 +0000 https://www.mytimminsnow.com/?p=72559

A celebration of life remembering Vic Power takes place Wednesday evening at the Timmins Museum. The city’s longest serving mayor died on February 3rd, just a couple weeks before his 90th birthday.

Museum director-curator Karen Bachmann says the family decided on the museum as the location.  They begin accepting visitors at 6:00pm Tributes begin at around 6:30.

“There’s a trio from the Timmins Symphony Orchestra who will also be performing throughout the course of the evening,” says Bachmann. “So we just invite people to come, have a chat with the family and just help us celebrate this former mayor.”

The museum location and the involvement of the symphony are apropos of both Mayor Power and his wife, Clarice.

“They’ve both been involved with both the symphony and the museum for a number of years,” notes Bachmann, “which was why the family asked that the celebration happen at the museum, because it was near and dear to Vic Power’s heart.”

Rehabilitation of two connecting link bridges begins this week, to last all summer https://www.mytimminsnow.com/72570/news/rehabilitation-of-two-connecting-link-bridges-begins-this-week-to-last-all-summer/ Mon, 06 May 2024 20:08:02 +0000 https://www.mytimminsnow.com/?p=72570

Work begins this week on rehabilitating two bridges in Timmins… as part of connecting link reconstruction.

The connecting link coordinator for city Hall, Eryk Rice says it involves the Mattagami bridge connecting Algonquin Boulevard and Riverside Drive, and the bridge near the Ontario government complex in Porcupine.

Rice says the contractor will reinforce the barriers between the sidewalks and the roadways before replacing the pavement on the roads.  They will remain open, but only one lane in each direction.

“They’re going to do the first – so let’s say the south side first – while the traffic’s on the north side. So the traffic will still be on asphalt. They’re going to pave the south side after they’re done all their little rehabs, and then the traffic will run on the south side,” Rice outlines.

He adds “It’ll be down to two lanes, one way in each direction. Pedestrian access will be maintained as well, during this stage of the project.”

The estimate is that the work will be done and the full four lanes of traffic restored by September.

Timmins history: Woodwork in some Hollinger management homes ‘exquisite’ https://www.mytimminsnow.com/72505/news/timmins-history-woodwork-in-some-hollinger-management-homes-exquisite/ Mon, 06 May 2024 10:00:33 +0000 https://www.mytimminsnow.com/?p=72505

In this week’s local history feature, we wrap up our examination of houses built by mining companies, specifically Hollinger’s houses in the Hill District, built for superintendents and supervisors at the mine.

Museum director-curator Karen Bachmann tells us that while those houses have all undergone exterior facelifts, a lot of the original design elements remain inside.

There was a lot of B.C. fir used in construction, because the mine also used it underground.

“Some of the woodwork in a lot of the places is exquisite,” she claims. “A lot of the design itself of the house, if it hasn’t been redone, really reflects what the houses would have looked like at the time.”

The bedrooms were small, and in some cases, there were several of them.  Bachmann adds that formal dining rooms are part of the design.

“Placement of the kitchens were also important if there was staff, because some of the superintendents would have staff in their homes, so either a cook or maid or who lived in to take care of the place. So there some of those quarters that you can still see within some of the homes.”

Our continued thanks to Karen Bachmann and her encyclopedic memory, for making our weekly history story possible.

OPP warn about crystal methamphetamine https://www.mytimminsnow.com/72531/news/opp-warn-about-crystal-methamphetamine/ Fri, 03 May 2024 17:35:12 +0000 https://www.mytimminsnow.com/?p=72531

OPP detachments from Cochrane to Hearst and Moosonee are noticing a marked increase in the presence of the illegal drug crystal methamphetamine.

Const. Kyler Brouwer says that’s based on hospitalizations and seizures of the crystal meth.

“And that’s not just on drug warrants or drug trafficking charges, as part of impaired driving investigations, break and enter investigations, weapons offences (and) assaults,” he elaborates.

Among the concerns, says Brouwer, is that it’s highly addictive and can cause several short- and long-term negative health effects.  It also goes hand-in-hand with other criminal activity.

“Pruduction of crystal methamphetamine is also very dangerous and can be hazardous to the community through fire, explorations, and the harmful fumes and waste that come from that as well.”

Here is Const. Brouwer’s list of things to watch for:

Signs of a Meth Lab:

  • Occupants appear unfriendly, secretive and avoid neighbour interactions.
  • Occupants attend for short time periods and at odd hours.
  • Garbage contains chemical containers, glassware or bags full of soil, or garbage is never put out at all.
  • Numerous security cameras that may appear excessive.
  • Chemical odours.
  • Chemical dumping on or near premises (burn pits or dead spots on lawn).
  • Odd items including equipment, glassware or chemical drums.

Dangers of a Meth Lab:

  • Fire or explosion
  • Harmful fumes and chemical exposure
  • Increased criminal activity
  • Environmental damage and waste

See the signs? Remain at a safe distance and do not confront occupants. Call the OPP 1-888-310-1122 or, if you wish to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
