Police report increased theft of tools and equipment from tradespeople’s vehicles

Here’s a new twist on “lock it or lose it”, and the advice not to keep valuables visible in your vehicle.

Over the past few weeks, Timmins Police have been dealing with several thefts from hotel and motel parking lots.

Communications coordinator Marc Depatie says most targeted are tradespeople from out of town who leave tools and valuable equipment in their vehicles.

“We are working with the local hospitality industry to encourage better lighting in the overnight parking areas and perhaps enlisting the use of on-site security to take a walk through a parking lot,” says Depatie.

Police are also encouraging those establishments to install security cameras.

And if it’s a pick-up truck you’re driving, don’t rely on the tonneau cover.

“They provide great weather protection and things are out of sight,” Depatie concedes, “but they don’t offer a tremendous amount of security in terms of items stored within.”

Depatie says most of the incidents being reported are from downtown and out the Riverside Drive strip.
