Last year, Timmins won first place in Ontario for being the most active community.
This year, the city’s community programs manager, Meagan Baranyk (MAY-ghin bah-RAN-ick) is aiming for the most active community in all of Canada.
“No matter where you are in Canada, this movement from Participaction allows individuals to get more active and it allows individuals to get more active more often,” Baranyk explains.
All you need to do is report whatever activity you accomplish all June long. The sizes of communities’ populations are pro-rated against each other. Baranyk says anyone can do it.
“However, if we get organizations to join and then track what they’re doing, those numbers go straight into the overall community score. So we definitely want to encourage organizations to register a little more than they did last year to bring us to the top.”
Last year’s prize money paid for a climbing wall at the Sportsplex pool. Baranyk says another survey this year will determine how it’s used.
