Environmental contractor GFL was called in to help the Timmins fire and public works departments deal with a fuel spill.
Fire chief Berny Stansa says it began Monday night, when a 45-gallon drum of fuel fell off a truck and the lid came off. The truck kept going.
Stansa says some of the fuel found its way from the road to storm sewers. Combined with a water main break, the fuel made it into Town Creek and then the Mattagami River.
Absorbent socks were deployed in Town Creek, while the workers travelled downriver, but found no signs of any contamination.
Stansa comments that 45 gallons is not a lot of fuel, but still has to be cleaned up.
