Whissell leaving CDSB over treatment centre

The Timmins councillor in whose ward the Ramada Inn sits is resigning from the Cochrane District Services Board.

Rock Whissell says he shares the frustrations of the people in Ward 1 who attended Monday night’s consultation on turning the hotel into a drug and mental health treatment centre.

In a Facebook post, Whissell says the meeting did not provide the transparency or assurance that was expected. He adds that the concerns he shares with the people he represents are not being adequately addressed.

Here is his entire post.

I want to take a moment to address the recent discussions and concerns surrounding the wellness center, as well as the unfortunate events that unfolded at the meeting last night.

Many of you who expressed concerns are not just members of the public but individuals I know personally—friends and family who care deeply about the well-being of Ward 1. I understand that your intent was never to cause disruption but rather to seek clarity and reassurance about the safety and security of the proposed facility. These are valid and important concerns, and you deserved answers.

Unfortunately, I share your frustration. The meeting did not provide the level of transparency or assurance that was expected, and I am deeply disappointed in how the situation was handled. The lack of clear communication and organization has only amplified the community’s concerns, leaving many of us without the peace of mind we sought.

After reflecting on this experience and considering my role, I’ve come to the difficult decision to step down from my position on the CDSB board. My commitment to this community remains unwavering, but I cannot continue in this capacity when the concerns of the people I represent—including my own—are not being adequately addressed.

I urge the CDSB board and those in leadership to take immediate steps to better engage with and listen to the community. Open dialogue and clear communication are essential to building trust, and I hope that, moving forward, the board will take these concerns seriously and work to regain the trust of those affected.

Thank you to everyone who has been involved in these important discussions. Your voices matter, and I will continue to advocate for our community in any way I can.
