Lighting up the sky this Canada Day over Gillies Lake, but not with fireworks

The sky over Gillies Lake will be lit up this Canada Day, but not by traditional fireworks.

The city’s Canada Day committee has opted to go with an LED-equipped drone light show. Committee member Mark Rogers says it’s because of a potential fire ban due to the lack of snow this past winter, and because it won’t frighten dogs or other animals.

“Better for the environment and it’s just something new,” he adds. “We have never seen this in Timmins before, so it’s the first drone show within the city of Timmins.”

The lights will be in the sky and reflecting off the water… beginning at 10:00pm.

“We have secured 100 drones for the show,” says Rogers. “The show’s approximately 12 minutes long. And that’s how it basically works. Each drone is lit up and much like a fireworks display, the drones do a display.”

Festivities begin at 7:00-m with a DJ, a couple food trucks and free Canada Day cupcakes from the city.
