Timmins history: Cricket and tennis

We continue to look at the popular sports early in the days of Timmins, in this week’s examination of local history.

Cricket has made a recent comeback, but museum director-curator Karen Bachmann says it was played in the Porcupine Mining Camp as early as 1912 and 13.

“And they would play in the softball park or baseball park, which was then called the Athletic Field, which is actually sort of near Cedar and Second Avenue,” she tells us.

For all its popularity now, Bachmann says tennis was also big back in the day.

“The Connaught Hotel, back in 1916, actually put tennis courts outside of their hotel, because was very fashionable to do, and was a place that anybody could go and play.”

More about early sports next Monday.

Thanks to Karen Bachmann and the museum for sharing material for our weekly feature.
