MONDAY AFTERNOON UPDATE: Team Chilton has a disappointing end to the competition. They dropped both games today, including the bronze medal match by a score of 4-3.
SUNDAY NIGHT UPDATE: Team Chilton placed third in round-robin play and moves on the playoff round with their first game at 8am Monday.
UPDATE: Team Chilton is 1-1 after the first day of competition. They’re tied for second place, headed into two Sunday round-robin games.
A rink from the McIntyre Curling Club is headed to Thunder Bay today (Thurs.) to compete in Under-18 women’s curling at the Ontario Winter Games. It will be up against five other teams.
Skip Deanna Chilton says her team is younger than average. She and second Leanna Delich are both 15; third Natalie Graham is 17; and lead is her sister, Kendall Chilton, who is 12 years old.
“Hopefully we do well, but we’re just going to go out there and do the best we can, and see how that goes,” says Deanna, adding that says her team’s strength is keeping the house clean.
“I think we are a very strong-hitting team, which is good, because we can usually keep our really good, defensive and simple game, most of the time.”
Even with a younger-than-average rink, the skip Deanna thinks its chances are pretty good, and is philosophical about whatever happens.
“We expect to improve our game and get some good games out of this great opportunity. And no matter the outcome, we are proud of our efforts, being that there are very strong and successful teams there.”
Among them is Team Dubinsky from Thunder Bay. Chilton will the fifth for that team at the U-20 national championships.
Team Chilton will be in Thunder Bay until Tuesday.
