In our local history feature this week, one more look at Vic Power, the longest-serving mayor of Timmins, who died recently.
Last week, museum director-curator Karen Bachmann told us how Mayor Power was well respected in several political circles, including provincial and federal circles.
She says he was not the flashy type of politician we see today but was fully prepared for any meeting on any issue.
“Get all the information you possibly can, prepare yourself intensely before you go into a meeting,” she recalls was his habit, “because the minute you open your mouth, everybody around the room is going to know if you know what you’re talking about, or if don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Bachmann adds that Power knew it wasn’t glamorous but was necessary. He would examine an issue from all angles, before deciding his position.
“Once he made his decisions, he would certainly champion that position and really explain to people how things were. Definitely not a flashy man, very quiet but unassuming, but very much an influencer.”
