One death confirmed in explosion at Comfort Inn Tuesday evening; traffic moving again

An explosion and the death of one person are confirmed by Timmins Police, in that incident Tuesday night in the parking lot of the Comfort Inn on Algonquin Blvd. E.

Communications coordinator Marc Depatie says a safety perimeter was immediately set up, the hotel and a couple of neighbouring businesses evacuated, and traffic blocked for much of the night.

“We have reopened vehicular traffic in the area,” he updates, “but certain businesses remain evacuated as well as the hotel, in order to complete a thorough appraisal of those affected areas.”

An OPP explosives disposal unit will identify the type involved, and determine whether any more explosives are on site.
