Paramedics across the Cochrane District have brought back their Brain Save program this summer.
Paramedic service commander Derrick Cremin says as they’re driving around while not on calls, medics are looking for any cyclist under 18 wearing a bike helmet. They’ll give them a free ice cream cone from McDonald’s.
“Their name also goes into a ballot box for a free bike being drawn in September that’s being donated by the local Canadian Tire,” he adds.
The program is mostly in Timmins, Kap and Hearst, although Cremin says every EMS vehicle has a ballot box, so anyone along the Hwy. 11 corridor can enter the bike draw.
“Last year, we saw over 150 kids who were wearing helmets, but we did see over 100 kids who were wearing helmets. Some education was provided for some of them. Yeah, I thin it’s a great program and our goal is trying to make sure that everyone out there stays safe.”
That goes for skateboarders and rollerbladers too, Cremin notes.
