The Canadian U-18 curling championships are underway at the Mac, and we pick up on our history feature about getting the sport established in Timmins.
There were several false starts in the early days of the community. Museum director-curator Karen Bachmann says finally, in 1924, it began to happen.
“And it was the Rod and Gun Club of all people,” she remarks. ”They just started their organization in January of 1924, and it came up as a point of discussion at their first meeting.”
A public meeting was called; 30 people showed up; and a five-man committee was set up to offer $100.00 shares in the new curling club.
From there, the organization moved on to build the curling club a home.
“They found some land to actually build this,” Bachmann recounts. They leased some land from the Hollinger Mine. Hill-Clark-Francis actually started to build the building.”
That building still stands as the Cassidy Armoury, behind the Bon-Air Motel.
