Hearst native Mathieu Nolet dies as a result of injuries from avalanche

An avalanche accident in Southern British Columbia has claimed its second victim.

Constable Mathieu Nolet of Hearst died at a Kelowna Hospital on Saturday following injuries received in the avalanche.

Nelson BC Police Chief  Donovan Fisher says they lost a second officer, as well as a friend and part of our Nelson Police Family.

“It’s been truly devastating,” Fisher said. “Constable Nolet worked for the Nelson Police Department for just over a year. Coming to us from Calgary where he was a police officer the year before. He will be greatly missed by all of us.”

Constable Wade Tittemore died at the scene of the accident, while Nolet survived and was dug out by people in the area who witnessed the slide.

In a statement, the Ontario Provincial Police Association says it was saddened at the news and is thinking about Mathieu’s parents and fellow association members Gino and Jen Nolet.
