Whissell files to return as Ward 1 councillor

Rock Whissell has is running for re-election in Ward 1 in this fall’s municipal election.

Shortly after dropping off his paperwork at city hall on Thursday, the Ward 1 councillor told My Timmins Now Dot Com that with four years experience, he can do more for his ward and the city.

He says when he was first elected in 2018, there was no plan in place.

“Starting next council,” he asserts, “I think council members should have some strong commitments of what we want to see in the next five years to ten years in our city.”

Whissell admits to having thought of running to be mayor, but he thinks he can do more as Ward 1 councillor.  And he has told Michelle Boileau he will support her bid for the top spot.

“I’ve worked with Michelle for the past four years. We sit on quite a few committees together. She’s more than capable of doing the job,” he says. “Having somebody totally different put their name down might be a surprise to everybody, but right now I support Michelle in her effort to become mayor.”

Boileau is the only mayoral candidate so far.  The only other council member to have filed the papers to run for re-election is Mickey Auger, the councillor for Ward 2 (South Porcupine).

The election for council members and school board trustees is Monday, October 24th.
