What visitors had to do in Timmins in 1915

The past couple weeks when we’ve looked back on Timmins history, we’ve covered how visitors got here in 1915, where they stayed and where they ate. Today: What they did for entertainment.

Timmins Museum director-curator Karen Bachmann says there were movies at the Majestic Theatre in South Porcupine and the Empire in Timmins.  Both also featured vaudeville shows.

“Didn’t like that, wanted to hang out at some pool rooms? A number of those in the community, with little saloons on the side,” she notes. “Although this was a dry area, you could still get yourself a beer – one of those mild beers that came in at about 2%. But anyways, at least you felt like you were doing something fun.”

You could also go shopping for treasures to bring home to your family.

“Marshall-Ecclestone had a great shop. There were jewellery stories here, like Halperin’s that specialized in all kinds of wonderful things like silver tea sets and diamond rings and all of those good things.”
