BREAKING NEWS: PHU territory moving into Phase 1 of provincial recovery plan

They are the words we’ve been waiting months to hear from Porcupine Health Unit medical officer of health, Dr. Lianne Catton.

”We are really pleased that we will be moving forward into Step 1 as of Friday morning.”

We’ve been waiting even more eagerly to hear it the past two weeks, when we were left behind the rest of the province as it moved into Step 1 of COVID-19 recovery.

“We knew we could do thi,” a smiling, jubilant Catton told reporters. “We knew that we would get here and just need to remember that we’re not done yet.  There’s still a risk of another surge. We must continue with the dedication that led us to this point to be able to move forward. And I’m confident we can and I’m confident we will.”

Step 1 arrives at 12:01am Friday.

Catton notes that a month ago today, the region hit its highest daily case count at 77.  Today’s is six.

“So we’ve done it,” the MOH remarks. “We’ve seen a tremendous decrease and we’re quite confident in the rate of this decrease and the sustained decrease that we’ve seen. So we need to move forward with that same abundance of caution, so that we don’t see a surge in cases from opening and moving forward with more interactions.”

Asked when we might move to Step 2, Catton said let’s wait until we’re in Step 1 to figure that out.
