OPP officer outlines rules for operating personal water craft

Call it a jet-ski, a sea-doo or a personal water craft.  ‘Tis the season for the OPP to issue warnings about operating one.

Const. Michelle Simard says you need a pleasure craft operator’s card, proving you took the test.

“We need to remember important rules like nobody under 16 are permitted to operate personal water craft,” she explains. “The operator may face a fine of up to $125 and the owner of he water draft could face a fine up to $305.”

Simard notes that a PWC operates differently than an outboard motor boat, so specialized training is needed. And as the saying goes, alcohol and gasoline don’t mix.

“There’s zero tolerance for alcohol and drug consumption while driving a vessel on the water. They carry the same fines as if you were driving a motor vehicle on the highway.”

Simard notes that the regulations are in place to keep jet-skiing and boating safe.
