The investigation into an early morning house fire in Timmins includes whether anyone was inside.
Deputy fire chief Ellard Beaven says the call came in at about 1:45am for 108 Elm St. South, at the intersection of Second Avenue.
Flames had spread from the basement to the ground and second floors, so firefighters had to fight it from outside.
Beaven says it’s not clear how many people were inside.
“Upon arrival, the incident commander was met by one individual coming out of the building,” he tells My Timmins Now Dot com. “He tried to speak to the individual and the individual left the building and we never made contact with that person again.”

“I’m not sure if that’s who reported it or a bystander,” Beaven adds, “because none of that’s clear yet. So at this time it’s just undetermined and we have to investigate it.”
This afternoon, Timmins Police said they’re still looking into how many people occupied the building but it’s believed up to six have been displaced.
The Ontario Fire Marshal’s office is also participating in the investigation.
The fire was under control at about 5:00am. Firefighters from Timmins, Mountjoy and Schumacher were still pouring water on it well into the mid-morning.
