Four-way stop requested for west end intersection

Speed limit signs haven’t worked, so Ward 1 city councillor Rock Whissell is asking for a four-way stop at Sandy Falls Road and Government Road.

“Having lived in this area for the past 20 years, I’m aware of the danger of this intersection,” he told this week’s regular council meeting.

He says the 50 kmh speed limit is rarely obeyed, quoting data from a July 2018 traffic study.  Over a nine-day period, it counted more than 3,200 vehicles crossing that intersection.

“The average speed was about 58 kmh,” Whissell cited. “They clocked three vehicles at 98 kmh and there was one that was stopped at 118 kmh.”

Whissell also noted that the odd angle at which Government Road crosses Sandy Falls Road and the hill on Sandy Falls Road both create blind spots for any driver travelling at more than 50 kmh.
