It looks like we’ll still have the full use of Algonquin Boulevard this summer after all.
The 0.5-km stretch between Thériault Boulevard and the Mattagami bridge was to be rebuilt. But as CAO Dave Landers told city council Monday night, it would cost substantially more than the six-point-one-million-dollar engineer’s estimate.
“There was only one bid received by the city and that bid was in the amount of almost $8.5-million,” Landers said, “and for that reason we’re not recommending that we move forward this year.”
Landers also told council that decisions need to be made on what to do in the near term and going forward.
“Some of the funds that would have been earmarked for the connecting link we would look to utilize to tackle some of the detour roads such as Laforest (Road) for example, which we need to bring up to speed in any event.”
Councillor Joe Campbell suggested cutting overall costs by “shaving and paving” other parts of the connecting link that don’t have pipes underneath them,so don’t necessarily need complete reconstruction.
