Why pancakes on Shrove Tuesday?

With or without blueberries, a lot of people will be eating pancakes for supper tonight.

It’s Shrove Tuesday, and the Very Reverend Valerie Isaac, dean of St. Matthew’s Anglican Cathedral and the Diocese of Moosonee tells us the significance of it on the Christian calendar.

“It’s reminding us to use up if you will all of the richness that we have in our diets and have a big party before we begin the austerity of Lent,” she explains.  “Ideally you have all your fatty foods and all your good stuff if you will and have it all eaten and cleaned out of your refrigerator and cupboards before Lent begins tomorrow.”

Thus pancakes with butter and syrup, bacon and sausages.

Today is also known as Mardi Gras, meaning “Fat Tuesday”.

Ash Wednesday tomorrow begins Lent the 40-day period leading up to Easter when Christians forego those rich foods to commemorate Christ fasting in the wilderness.
