No firm date for Hollinger Skateway to open

The city wants to make sure it gets the new skateway in Hollinger Park right.  That’s why it’s not open yet.

Project supervisor Gerry Paquette says his workers are on a learning curve, having never built a rink on a walking path.

“We only started the watering process today (Friday),” he says. “ so it’s dependent on how well that goes and weather conditions.  So I really can’t give you a firm date as when the ice will be ready to skate on.”

Paquette knows that people who don’t want to wait might lace up anyway.

“We will be putting some barricades up to try and avoid that situation,” he notes.  “We don’t want to see people skating until we’ve given the final okay that in our opinion, the ice is in good condition and safe to do so.”

The Timmins Community Park Association has already been told not to expect the skateway to be ready for its event next Saturday.
