Symphony to debut piece written for its 40th anniversary

It’s a big night in a big place with a big sound on Saturday, when the Timmins Symphony Orchestra wraps up its 40th anniversary season at St. Anthony’s Cathedral.

Orchestra director Josh Wood says the musicians will be debuting a piece from local composer Luc Martin.  It was written for this anniversary year and is called “Celebration”.

“It’s sort of a solemn celebration,” Wood describes. “It has – I don’t like to sound pretentious – but sort of noble, sweeping lines that go through the piece.  It’s very accessible and has some very nice moments in it, has some really nice melodies that I think people are really going to enjoy.”

Apart from that, the evening features classical music and choral and Broadway music from the symphony’s own chorus and the Timmins Concert Singers.

“We’re also doing some Broadway stuff as well,” says Wood. “ So it’s a combination of sort of really big, exciting choral music.  A real sort of big, overwhelming sound.  It’s really neat to experience.”

Tickets are available at the Timmins Museum and at the door, if there are any left.
