Flying the flag of the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association, unit president Louis Clausi was outside O’Gorman High School on Thursday, as students walked out to protest government changes to education. He says it’s important for students to have a voice.
Among his objections to the planned cuts and changes is having students earn four credits online in order to graduate.
“I have some experience with e-learning,” Clausi explains. “It’s difficult doing things online, especially for Grade 9 and 10 students. I don’t think that’s good and I think it’s just an attempt to privatize and outsource education to this virtual call centre somewhere, probably not even teachers running it.”
When it comes to all the changes, Clausi says all the Ford government is doing is picking up from the former Mike Harris Conservative government.
“A lot of these things are not new ideas. They’re picking up from there and they’re moving forward without consultation. They talk about consultation, but it’s not real consultation. There’s no partners right now. They make decisions and they tell you about them.”
