Timmins now has its first needle disposal site.
The Porcupine Health Unit now has a 24 hour needle drop box in front of the building. The health unit says this drop box will be available every day of the year so people can safely dispose of their used needles. PHU says this is something that is set up in many cities in Ontario and it is excited to bring the program to Timmins. Program Coordinator for harm reduction programs Mary France Caron Bruneau says this is to keep the community clean and safe.
Caron Bruneau says this is the only one set up in Timmins right now. She says the health unit is working with the City of Timmins to see if more can be set up.
Caron Bruneau says there aren’t very many needles reported around the city, but this project aims to ensure Timmins stays clean and safe for all.
Caron Bruneau says if you see a needle on the ground you shouldn’t pick it up and take it to the drop off bin. She says there are needle removal kits available at the health unit to make sure it is done safely. Click here for more information on needle disposal.
