Some of the watermain breaks along Riverside Drive could be fixed faster than expected.
The City of Timmins says it is seeing some big cost savings on the Meadow Lane project because of some new technology. About $920,000 in savings will be used to replace the pipe between Shirley and Government Road.
Council says it had planned phase one of this project for this year, but having these savings will hopefully put an end to the ongoing break in the area.
Manager of Engineering Pat Seguin says the money was saved by using a trenchless rehabilitation method. Instead of digging up the street, crews lined the pipes through a man hole with an epoxy liner. Seguin says the liner is structural so it doesn’t count on the carrier pipe for strength. He says if the carrier pipe deteriorates, the liner will take over as the pipe. He says using this liner took the Meadow Lane project’s budget from $1-million down ton $80,000. Sequin says the liner is expected to last and protect for 75 to 100 years.
There have been five watermain breaks on Riverside Drive since July 16th. Seguin says those pipes are nearing their end of life.
The project cost is estimated at $700,000. Seguin says any extra money will go towards lining carrier pipes on either Way, Middleton or Powerline Avenue.
