There are mixed feelings about the number of taxis in Timmins.
Currently there are 60 taxi plates in town with Vet’s Taxi owning 49 and the remaining 11 are owned by Northern Taxi. Northern Taxi is looking to get more plates so it can expand its business. Constable Tom Buczkowski, who is the point of contact for taxi companies, says Timmins has the right number of taxis running right now.
Buczkowski says some of the taxi companies believe that once you add more taxis, you are cutting the amount of work for everyone.
If the police board decides to add more taxi plates, the plates would be awarded through a lottery system. This means the plates could go to either company. The Police Services Board will discuss this further at its next meeting.
