Timmins seeking legal advice on releasing tender bids to the public

Timmins is going to be getting legal advice to determine what the city’s responsibility is when it comes to disclosing bids for projects. Councillor Joe Campbell originally brought the issue forward, saying the city has a responsibility to be transparent, and maintain financial integrity. Campbell quoted a recent ruling by the Information of Privacy Commission, which stated publicly funded contract information should be disclosed routinely and proactively. The process is meant to strengthen transparency around municipal spending, and improve public confidence. Campbell says his resolution is to ensure public information will not be held from taxpayers, unless it meets certain criteria.

Mayor Steve Black was on board with the overall idea, but says the municipality needs a formal legal opinion to verify what Campbell stated. Council voted and they will be getting advice on if council has access to all of the information, and if prices and RFP’s can be disclosed to the public.
