Tax increase moving from 3% to 1% after staff recommendations

Timmins city council is doing their best to bring the tax increase down to one per cent this year. Mayor Steve Black says they are going through the budget line by line, trying to cut down spending where they can. He says they were originally looking at an increase of 2.94 per cent, which didn’t include increases to property assessments. That meant some home owners were facing a hike of almost nine per cent in total, which Black says council wasn’t happy with.

So they asked city staff to bring a list of recommendations to council to bring the increase down by two per cent. Black says staff did that, and then council added some of their own items. Council is almost ready to finalize the budget, and Black expects the hike to be between zero and one per cent. That just applies to the mill rate, or property tax, increase and doesn’t include assessment increases which vary house by house.
