Timmins is taking the next step to get provincial funding for the Connecting Link

Timmins is continuing the process to get funding from the province for the Connecting Link. Council approved an application this week, which will be sent on to the province. The city is asking for $3 million for the first phase of the project. Mayor Steve Black says the application is for a section of road in South Porcupine; from the Bruce-Y and extending around two kilometres toward Schumacher. He says that section of the four lane highway has reached its end of life, and is the only part of the highway that will be ready for construction in 2016.

Redoing the rest of the highway means replacing buried infrastructure, and final design for those phases won’t be done until 2017 or later. The province will decide on who will be getting grant money this spring. The total cost for the project is currently estimated at $95 million.
