Roads budget getting an additional $250K this year

Timmins has voted to spend an additional $250,000 on the roads this year. That number was originally meant to be $1 million however $750,000 was taken out after the sidewalk to Walmart was vetoed. Overall the city spends around $7 million on the roads, and Mayor Steve Black says they are putting a slight increase into this year’s budget.

The Mayor says with taxes going up this year, and an impending Connecting Link redesign, council decided to pull the sidewalk to Walmart out of the running for this year. They are also taking into consideration the upcoming Connecting Link redesign study, which should be out by the end of February. Early numbers are showing nearly $100 million to redo Algonquin over 10 years. The city has applied for a $3 million grant to do the first phase, with Black saying the highway should be a provincial responsibility.

The budget process is still continuing at council, as decisions are being made about where to allocate tax dollars.
