Timmins is working on bringing another part of the 2020 plan to life with an age friendly strategy. Co-chair of the Timmins Age-Friendly Steering Committee, Maggie Matear, says that means improving quality of life for those 50 and over.
The plan has two parts, the first is consultations. The committee is looking for input from 1,000 older adults, which they define as 50 and over, by March of this year. They will be asking about the eight dimensions of an age friendly community, which range from social inclusion to transportation. The second phase will then take a few of those key recommendations and put them into action.
Matear says if the 2020 plan is going to be a success, the population of older adults needed to be considered, especially since that number is growing. She says the plan is to address any gaps they can identify and work to fill them, so the city can trumpet itself as an age friendly community in 2020.
The project is costing around $60,000 and is being paid for by in part by the province, and the Timmins Economic Development Corporation.
