Pearl Lake is too dangerous for winter sports this year, residents asked to stay off

Goldcorp and Timmins are asking residents to stay off of Pearl Lake this winter. Action at the Hollinger Mine is increasing, which means there is ground water discharged into the Little Pearl Tailings Pond. That water eventually ends up in the lake, increasing the movement. As it is with the Mattagami River, when there is moving water it is harder for a safe layer of ice to form. Anyone snowshoeing, skiing, or snowmobiling are encouraged to stay off of the lake and stay safe.

The Timmins Snowmobile Club says that lake isn’t part of the trail system, and riders should take the trail to McIntyre Road and cross at the lights.
