The northeastern OPP is helping to make our roads safer with a new license scanning program. It’s called the Automatic License Plate Recognition Program. South Porcupine OPP Constable Maggie O’Connor says they are the first in Ontario to get this program. Cruisers equipped with the ALPR system will have access to an MTO database, that has all plates of cars, whose licensed drivers are suspended.
When the camera scans a plate, it produces a hit that will notify the officer if the drivers license is suspended. O’Connor says this is helping to keep roads safer, after an MTO review shows around 2,000 injuries and fatal crashes happen every year involving unlicensed drivers.
Local OPP detachments will have one cruiser equipped with the ALPR program, and for a limited time.
