Council pushing for a $30 water rate increase, as opposed to $50

Timmins is talking about raising water and sewer rates by either $30 or $50. City Engineer Luc Duval brought the options to council in a meeting this week, and it looks like the committee is leaning toward the $30 option.

Although it is easier on tax payers, Mayor Steve Black says the move may be a bit shortsighted. He has been lobbying for a higher increase for five years now, during his term as a councillor and now as Mayor. Black says if the city doesn’t put a more significant increase into place, they can never stem the trend of prices going up every year.

Duval said in his report to council this week that the $30 increase will continue for the next 35 years. Black says when you look at the long term impact of that, it’s quite significant if they don’t do something to generate funds now.

But the majority of council agreed that the $50 hike will be too big of a burden on tax payers. A bylaw to put the increase into effect will come back for council to vote on.
