Timmins is going to donate two weeks worth of parking ticket dollars to the food bank. That equals out to around $8,000, which will be collected from now until December 11th. Council voted five to three to pass the idea during Monday night’s meeting, with some councillors bringing up concerns about the core service review. KPMG says there is an estimated savings of $100,000 if the city stops donating to charities.
The idea to support the food bank with parking ticket dollars was originally suggested by Mayor Steve Black in a meeting last month. The city looked at allowing people to pay their tickets with canned food, but the Ontario Legislature doesn’t allow for that. So instead the revenue will be banked over the next two weeks and then split up between our local food banks.
