SIU clears TPS officer of wrongdoing

There are no reasonable grounds to believe a Timmins Police Service officer did anything criminal during an incident in which a 28-year-old man suffered two fractured ribs.

That finding has been issued by Special Investigations Unit director Joseph Martino.

It goes back to June 24th, when police were called to the Circle K on Algonquin Blvd. W. They were told a man armed with a knife assaulted a guard and other customers and stole a beer.

The officer on the call chased him down, forced him to the ground, handcuffed him and brought him to police headquarters. He resisted being put into a cell. Two officers pinned him to the cell bench and tried to remove the cuffs.  That’s when he was struck with the officer’s knee.

Martino concluded the evidence that included video did not establish the force used was unlawful.
