City finds almost $16M in illegal construction projects

Almost $16-million worth of illegal construction has been happening in Timmins. A year-end property assessment report is showing that since 2013, there have been almost 1,200 construction projects done without permits. The majority of the projects have been decks, but the city is also reporting additions, garages, and sheds.

Assessment Investigator David Campbell says this is affecting the city’s bottom line. He says if MPAC processes all 1,200 projects, that would add up to around $264,000 in annual property taxes for the city. The Municipal Property Assessment Corporation will look at the individual cases, and potentially re-evaluate property values.

More than 6,000 properties have been looked at since 2013, and the city’s Director of Development Mark Jensen says they aren’t done. He says there is still over 11,000 residential properties left to review, along with a significant amount of commercial properties to look at.
