Nursing students are learning about First Nations culture

Northern College has sent ten third-year nursing students to the Mattagami First Nation to learn more about Northern communities. Nursing students are working with First Nations as part of Northern’s Rural and Remote Nursing Experience.

The program’s coordinator, Johanne Carbonneau says it’s important healthcare professionals in the north are equipped to work in Aboriginal communities. She says nurses try and provide holistic care, which can mean including their clients’ culture in that care.

She says a better understanding of First Nations and Aboriginal culture are important parts of working in the healthcare field in the northeast.
