Police advice on how not to be steamrolled by driveway paving scam

Police across the region are sticking to their advice to watch out for driveway paving scams.

Timmins Police Sgt. Kathryn Beatty says a paving crew will show up at your house, offering a low price to pave your driveway using leftover material.

“And in the past, the material that’s been used is substandard and the driveways essentially crumble,” she says.

Beatty advises that you ask for a business card and phone number, take a step back and do some research.

“They will offer a cash deal and get it done right away,” she adds. “That’s where the scam comes in is that it’s done. It’s subpar and then you can’t locate anyone to come back and fix it.”

The workers also demand more cash than originally agreed to.

“Often the victims are people who are more senior in age. But it really can be anyone who’s a victim.”

If you’re a victim, call police. Your information could help someone else avoid being victims
